Post 290 Oratorical Contest Winners

Caroline Green, is the winner of the Stafford American Legion Post 290 Oratorical Contest, held at the Post on Thursday, January 24, 2008. Caroline Green, a Senior at North Stafford High School, earned a $100 award and will represent the Post at the 16th District Oratorical Contest on February 2, 2008 at American Legion Post 10 in Manassas, Virginia.

Each contestant delivered a prepared oration as well as an oration on a randomly assigned constitutional topic.

Ms. Green impressed the judges with a speech titled “Freedom of Speech”

The following is a list of the contestants and their finishing places in the contest:

Nicholas Larsen - Second Place – Sophomore - Stafford Senior High School – alternate to the District competition. His prepared oration was titled “Voting” Mr. Larsen was awarded $75.
Sarah Grawe - Third Place – Senior - North Stafford High School. Her prepared oration was titled “The 19th Amendment.” Ms. Grawe received a $50 award.
Sara Sellers - Runner-up – Senior - North Stafford High School. Her prepared oration was titled “We the People.” Ms. Sellers was awarded $25.
Melissa Mahfouz - Runner-up – Senior - North Stafford High School. Her prepared oration was titled “To Embrace a Nation.” Ms. Mahfouz received a $25 award.

Since 1938, The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program has encouraged the nation’s high school students to study the U.S. Constitution and to hone their public speaking skills.
